The duration of a nose surgery procedure differs based on the complexity of the surgery. On average, rhinoplasty takes approximately 1 to 3 hours to complete. Your rhinoplasty surgeon will provide a more accurate estimate during your initial consultation, considering your desired changes.
A nose surgery is not typically described as a painful procedure. Most rhinoplasty patients report mild to moderate discomfort rather than severe pain. Any discomfort you experience can be effectively managed with prescribed pain medication. While you may feel some congestion and pressure in your nose due to swelling, this is generally well-tolerated and resolves as you heal.
The immediate recovery period from rhinoplasty typically lasts around two weeks. You may experience noticeable swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose during this time. However, minor residual swelling can last up to a year, especially in the nasal tip. After the first two weeks, most patients can resume regular daily activities, including work or school. However, avoiding strenuous activities for several weeks is advisable to minimize the risk of complications or increased swelling.
While most initial swelling subsides within a few weeks after rhinoplasty, the final results of the surgery may take up to a year to fully manifest. The nose continues to refine and settle, with subtle changes occurring. Patience is essential as the final outcome becomes more apparent with each passing month.
The visibility of scars after rhinoplasty depends on the surgical technique used. The incisions for closed rhinoplasty are made entirely inside the nostrils, so they are not visible from the outside. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), which typically heals well and becomes less noticeable over time. In both cases, the goal is to minimize visible scarring and create natural-looking results. Your surgeon will discuss the incision approach during your consultation and address any concerns about scarring.
